Culm Diameter: 2 to 2.5 inches
Hardiness: -20° C, Zone 6

Aspect: full sun

Sometimes called water bamboo, Atrovaginata has air canals in its rhizomes which allow it to grow in wetter conditions than most bamboo (although no bamboo will survive long term in saturated soil). This is very useful here in the wet, west coast. It matures and attains its imposing size quickly, particularly in our climate, enabling large groves faster than most bamboo. This Phyllostachys is useful in medium size commercial and open, residential locations where its architectural structure and size can be appreciated.
