Bamboo Barriers?

Fast growing, spreading bamboos are useful for producing a lush, tropical effect and high vertical screens quickly. Our comparatively dry, cool summers will slow their spread but they may need control to keep them in their place in the long run. Before planting consider installing an underground bamboo barrier. This is a thin, high density plastic “curtain” extending about 24” below grade (bamboo generally roots in the top 12”) around the bamboo. It forces spreading rhizomes to the surface where they can be cut off annually. Another option is to maintain a 3 to 5 foot space around running bamboo so spreading rhizomes and shoots can be accessed and removed (dug up). Or consider planting running bamboos in large pots (1/2 whiskey barrels are the perfect shape) or pressure treated wood planters.
